Joyce Beverly Thornton, age 92, of St. Charles, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016 at home with her family by her side.
She was born February 2, 1924 in Marinette, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Katherine (Kiefer) Burkart.
Joyce worked at the Elgin Watch Factory. She then went to school at the Art Institute of Chicago and became an artist and professional portrait painter. She worked at Elgin American doing artwork on cosmetic compacts. One compact line depicted each state of the United States of America. She painted and showed her professional works mainly made with the use of acrylics on canvas. She was a member of the Fox Valley Art League.
Joyce married Richard McMillan Thornton on March 20, 1948 in Elgin. She loved cats, flower gardens, painting, watching the Cubs, and traveling especially to southwestern states. She raised seven children in a dedicated and loving manner. She was most happy spending time with her family and they will miss her dearly.
Joyce is survived by her children Richard (Cindy) of Strongsville, OH, Thomas (Marie) of Grafton, WI, Lance (Missy) of Geneva, Kevin (Carol) of Chicago, Shawn (Diane) of St. Charles, and Anne Gosz of St. Charles; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; siblings Eugene Burkart, Joan Brown, and Gordon Burkart; and many other dear relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jeanette Rowe, son Daniel, grandson Ian, son-in-law Tom Gosz, and her loving husband Richard who passed away in 2015.
Funeral prayers for Joyce will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 9:30 am at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva proceeding to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles for celebration of Funeral Mass at 10:30 am with Father David Peck, celebrant.
Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 8 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at Malone Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174 will be appreciated.
