Mrs. Rachel King Lawrence, 96, of Winston-Salem, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 31, 2016, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home of Winston-Salem. Rachel was born in Wake County, NC to the late Gid Hunt King and Ronie Woodlief King. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Gilbert Randolph Lawrence; her sisters, Virginia Dare King, Doris Eva Shouse and Helen Ronie King McKenzie; and her brothers, Rodman Lewis King, Harvey Woodlief King, Gid Hunt (GH) King, Daniel Odell King, and Julian Baxter King. She is survived by her loving daughters, Deborah King Lawrence Perry of Unicoi, TN and Marilyn Kearns Lawrence Weiler (John) of Kernersville, NC; her granddaughter, Johanna Kathleen Weiler of Walnut Creek, California; her sister, Mildred Faye King Bryson of Winston-Salem; her brother, Joseph Melvin King Widdifield of Morristown, TN; and many nieces and nephews. Rachel grew up with her younger sisters and brothers at the Methodist Children’s Home in Winston-Salem and was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and the Winston-Salem Business College. During WWII, she served in The Office of Flying Safety for the US Army Air Forces. After the war, she worked for several local businesses and churches as a bookkeeper. She was a charter member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Florence Weaver Circle, sang in the Chancel Choir, worked with the youth, and taught 3 year old Sunday School. She also sang with the Maids of Melody, a vocal group of young women who sang for Civic Clubs and Veterans Hospitals. She served as secretary of the Civic Music Organization which brought major professional music and ballet companies to Reynolds Auditorium for the local community. She was a long-time member of the South Fork Extension Homemakers and later the Peace Haven Extension & Community Organization, the Winston-Salem Craft Guild, the Salem Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild, and an avid Duplicate Bridge player and teacher. She was a creative person and a life-long learner continually taking on new projects including the collection of aluminum cans which she sold to raise money for Brenner Children’s Hospital. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Ford and Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. The burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Thursday prior to the service at Centenary United Methodist Church and at other times at 1131 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem.
