The Reverend Milton Curtis Bierschwale joined the Church Triumphant on Wednesday, July 27,2016. He was born April 26, 1924, on a ranch near Junction, Texas, to Floyd and Hazel Mangold Bierschwale. He attended school at Segovia and graduated from Junction High School in 1942. He attended Sul Ross College in Alpine for one year, working in the agriculture department for his uncle, Albert Bierschwale, who was a professor there.
In 1943, Milton enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving his country in the 94th Bomb Group in the 8th Air Force, during World War II. After the war, Milton returned to help on the ranch, then later enrolled in Texas A & M University, from which he graduated in 1949 with a degree in chemical engineering. After working in west Texas for Shell Oil Company for a couple of years, he felt called to follow his paternal grandfather into the ministry. Milton graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1954 and, in October, married the love of his life, Margaret Purcell. They served Presbyterian churches in West Columbia and Old Ocean, Nocona, Caldwell and Somerville, Premont, Fredericksburg and Harper, and Yorktown, as well as Woodsboro Faith United Church in Woodsboro. Milton retired after 35 years in the ministry.
After retiring to Fredericksburg, Milton remained active. He served as parish associate of Memorial Presbyterian Church for a time. He and Margaret joined a square dance club, which they enjoyed for a few years. He sang in the church choir and played the harmonica for a group who sang in nursing homes. Milton regularly attended reunions of his bomber group, and locally belonged to the Ex-military Flyers Club.
Milton is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret; three sons, Bill and wife Lori of Irving, David and wife Carol of Utah, and John and wife Nancy of Colorado; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service for Rev. Milton Bierschwale will take place on Saturday July 30 at 10:00 a.m. in the Junction City Cemetery in Junction with Rev Jim Barker officiating. A memorial service will take place at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg Saturday July 30, 2016 at 2:00p.m. with Rev. Ann Hoch officiating. Visitation will be Friday July 29 from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. in the Fredericksburg Funeral Home.
