Born in Seneca County New York and moved to Pleasant Valley Township in 1836. Other family members (brother Stephen Smith and father Ebenezer) followed in 1837 and 1838. Married Jane Barker and had Ruby and John N. in 1839 and 1842 respectively. Sometime between 1842 and 1844 the family moved to Osh Kosh, Wisconsin, the site of Charles's birthplace. In the 1850 census the family was recorded in Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin Marquette County. Pleasant Valley, Wi changed names to Princeton, Wi. which is now in Green Lake County. By the 1860 census the family was recorded back in Pleasant Valley Township Scott County Iowa but Ruby had married Jesse Dodds in 1859 and is not recorded with the other four.
