Betty Jane Burke, age 97, died very peacefully July 29th, 2016 at The Village at Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Betty is survived by her son Tom Vickers and wife Pat, by Jim Burke and his wife Lynda Billa Burke, and by her stepson John Burke and wife Nelly.

Betty received her Master's Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in 1952. Over the course of her social work career at DePelchin Faith Home in Houston she dramatically impacted the lives of hundreds of children. For much of her social work career, Betty had the enormous responsibility of evaluating at risk childrens' home environment and writing recommendations to the court concerning placement in a foster home, and the continuing responsibility for filing updated recommendations concerning the childrens' placement. Betty prided herself in going to great lengths conduct detailed in-home interviews and in properly appraising each child and the people surrounding that child - each situation was unique and, because of her record of success, Betty often received the most difficult cases.

Indeed, Betty had a wonderful talent for understanding people, which she later used to help her husband, E. J. Burke, Jr. create an enterprise that for a brief time was the largest private homebuilding company in the United States. E. J. Burke Jr went on to become the President of the National Association of Homebuilders, the second largest trade organization in the world. Mr. Burke died in 1983.

Betty's core belief in the importance of keeping families together greatly influenced the creation of the Committee on Housing Low Income Families, which today remains an important facet within the Homebuilder's Association.

Betty's family extends special thanks to her wonderful long time caregivers, Maria Pena and Gabby Rivera, and to Avionn Home Care.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday August 2nd at Heritage Oaks Mortuary at 2502 S. W.W. White Road. Funeral services for Betty will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 631 Utopia Lane in Southeast San Antonio on August 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Attendees please note that St. Stephens shares facilities with Brookhill Baptist Church. Interment to follow at Mission Burial Park South.
