OBITUARY: Karen Rosok Becker - reprinted from the August 7, 2016 St. Paul Pioneer Press

Karen Rosok BECKER, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Musician, died peacefully at home in Oakdale on July 28, 2016. She grew up in a farming community in Montana, but set foot in many places throughout the world. Born on December 14, 1951, Karen's music-making began early: she started piano at age 5, and began playing organ at church in 7th grade. By late high school, Karen was playing concertos. After earning a music degree from the University of Montana, which included 10 weeks of study in Vienna, Karen attended the University of Mainz, Germany, on a Fulbright Fellowship. She then earned an MA in Music History from the University of Minnesota, where she met John. In addition to raising three children and teaching many piano students, Karen served as organist at Guardian Angels Church, Oakdale, for 38 years. She was involved in a wide range of musical activity in both church and community. Karen was a member of the American Guild of Organists and Saint Paul Piano Teachers, serving as a local officer for both organizations. Karen was involved in other activities as well. She was a long-time member of a German reading group. She had a vibrant spiritual life, participating in centering prayer activities at St. Paul's Monastery and Aramaic retreats, and learning xigong meditation. She brought art appreciation to a local elementary school, and musical experiences to young children. And she served as a mentor through Big Sisters of Saint Paul. Karen will be missed by many, including her husband, John, children, Tim (Kate) Rosok and Christine and Andrew (Kendall Patterson) Becker, grandchildren Annika and Theodore Rosok, siblings, Mae Joanne (Tom Hom), George, and Larry (Teresa Tartaglione) Rosok and Lisa (Josh) Kerns, and nieces and nephews. The Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, at Guardian Angels in Oakdale. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 7, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Monday at 9:00, at Guardian Angels. Memorials preferred, to Guardian Angels Music Ministry.
