Gaffney, SC - - Melford Floyd Martin, 92, of 207 E. Robinson Street, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at his home.
He was born in Gaffney, SC on January 28, 1924 to the late Morgan Martin and Maggie Hardin Martin. He served his country faithfully as a sergeant during World War II on the front lines in Italy. He was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945. He retired as an employee from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the “Big Mill”.
“Papa Martin” was the rock of his family. He was married 69 years to Vernie Mae Martin who passed away in January. He taught his family the value of love, family, hard work, unselfishness and happiness in any circumstances.
He is survived by two sons, Sherrill F. Martin and wife, Carolyn of Columbia, SC and Daniel J. Martin and wife, Dawn of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Diane Martin Duncan and husband, Bobby of Gaffney; nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 207 E. Robinson Street on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. There will be a viewing on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 12:00 until 1:00 PM. The funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 PM at the Church with Bishop Daren Carling officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
