William Harris was the son of Richard Harris and Ellen Cotter and he was born in Cork, Ireland. He was Baptized February 28, 1846 in Cork (This is the date from Dictionary of Canadian Biography. His grave marker states his date of birth is March 10, 1846. There was either a mistake in the baptism date or his birth date.) His family may have moved to Toronto from Ireland in the early 1850's. Richard Harris was educated in Toronto. Father Harris was ordained in June 11, 1870 and held administrative and pastoral positions over the next thirty years. He eventually became Dean of the Diocese of St Catherine's. Father Harris was a world traveler and based on his travels he authored twelve books on the Catholic Church in early Canada.

From a book titled Mother Jones by Elliott J. Gorn on pages 278 and 279 the author indicates that Father William Richard Harris and Mary Harris Jones are full siblings. Please know that Elliott Gorn is a respected historian and a member of a prestigious society of historical writers.

It is recommended to read the above reference on his life as well as the write up in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography as well as others which are easily found on google.
