Edith Hoffmann Gibson of Beaufort, SC passed away peacefully Thursday, June 30 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Edith was born June 28, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. She spent her childhood through high school in Richmond, VA and attended Mary Baldwin College. She came home to take care of her mother who had fallen ill.

She worked in New York in executive recruiting and then moved to Washington, D.C. where her brother introduced her to Horace (Hoot) Gibson, who worked for IBM. They fell head over heels in love and were married in 1957. They lived in Kalamazoo, MI, Bloomfield Hills, MI and then in Peoria, IL where they lived until Mr. Gibson's retirement.

She had always wanted to move back south and they moved to Hilton Head in 1981, where Hoot passed away in 1984. Edith moved to Beaufort, SC in 2000 to be closer to her family. Edith had a wonderful life and enjoyed travel and fine food. She was generous to a fault. There was nothing she liked more than spending time with her children and grandchildren, who affectionately called her "GG", which she decided stood for her being a really great grandmother. She devoted her entire life to her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend and role model for all. She will be sorely missed, but is now in heaven and reunited with the love of her life.

One of the most important qualities she had was no matter how busy she was, she would always take the time to hear what you had to say and offer her "neutral" opinions and try to help. She always told us that whenever we did things, do them well and do them right. Edith led by example. She was of strong moral character and always did "the right thing", no matter how difficult. She will have the eternal respect and admiration of her children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Horace John Gibson, Jr. , her father, George A. Hoffmann, Sr., her mother Adele Lowe Hoffmann, and her brother, George A. Hoffmann, Jr. She is survived by her two children, Laura Gibson Achurch and T. Mark Gibson, both residents of Beaufort, SC, her favorite son-in-law Robert W. Achurch III and her grandchildren, Elizabeth Achurch, Gibson Achurch and Mary Margaret Achurch.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 on Friday, August 5th at St. Peter's Chapel. Following the Mass, she will be laid to rest at Beaufort National Cemetery with her husband. Donations can be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice. Sauls Funeral Home is serving the family.
