Chuck was a multi-sport athlete and a sports official who was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

He was a 1956 graduate of Feitshans High School where he earned all-city honors seven times: three times in baseball and two years in basketball and two years in footfall. He also lettered in track as a freshman. He was named Springfield's football "Lineman of the Year" in 1955. He led the Feitshans that year to a 20-4 basketball record and as a guard, he scored a tourney-leading 55 points in the 1956 City Tournament.

Chuck was a shortstop, outfielder and pitcher in baseball. He later played in local teams that advanced to the American Amateur Baseball Congress National Tournament in Battle Creek, Mich.

Gantt began umpiring baseball games in the late 1950s, eventually working amateur, high school and college baseball games for over 40 years. He also officiated high school basketball and football games. He was the boys' sports director for the Springfield Recreation Dept from 1971-1975.

Chuck was survived by his wife, Alice J. Gantt; a son and a daughter; a stepdaughter and stepson; brother Gale Gantt; seven grandchildren.

Services were at Staab Funeral Home with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
