Opal I. (Black) Kerns
1927-2016


Opal I. (Black) Kerns, 89, Savannah, Missouri, formerly of Tonganoxie, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016 at her home.
She was born May 30, 1927 in Scribner, Nebraska.
Opal married Albert William Kerns on November 10, 1953, who preceded her in death in 2001.
She loved her family, gardening, baking, sewing, and traveling.
Opal enjoyed watching children for many years in her home and at one time counted over two hundred children that had been in her care throughout the years.
She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Albert, Jr.; parents, Maurice and Addie (Brown) Black; brothers, Merle, Floyd, Willard, Wayne, Raymond, Bill, Maurice Jr.; and sisters, Alta, Beulah, Doris, Gladys, and Ruth.
Survivors include brother, Dale Black, Olathe, KS; daughter, Mona Kerns-Shoemaker (Danny) Savannah, Missouri; sons, Mark Kerns (Katt) Dade City, Florida and Mike Kerns (Lynn) Oskaloosa, Kansas; seven grandchildren; five bonus grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four bonus great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Care provided by Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations be made to a local hospice of the donor’s choice.
