Harold Bates passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 after a long illness. Harold was born in Dallas on August 4, 1929.

He grew up on a farm in Canton, TX and graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas. He worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. in the candy department where he met the love of his life, Wanda Rathmell. They were married in Mesquite, TX in 1948. Harold joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict from 1951 - 1955 and served in Amarillo, TX as a Staff Sargent training mechanics on F86 aircraft engines. After military service he attended SMU and graduated with a BA in Business Administration in 1957. Harold worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. from 1948 to 1986 in a number of positions including corporate offices in Chicago, IL and as store manager in Odessa, TX.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Homer Buford and Elsie Blanche Fugate Bates.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Wanda; daughter Becky Christopherson and husband Allen of Georgetown, TX; and grandson Will Christopherson who is serving in the U.S. Air Force presently in Abilene, TX. He is also survived by his brother Billie Joe Bates and wife Virginia of Hurst, TX.

Harold was active in church, serving in the choir, Sunday school teacher and other roles at the Heights Baptist Church in Richardson. He enjoyed hobbies of woodworking, gardening, raising a grandson, and traveling throughout the US and UK with his lovely wife.

The family will receive friends for visitation at the Restland Funeral Home at 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas on Friday, July 29, 2016, between 6 and 8 PM.

The memorial service will be at the Abbey at Restland on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 9:30 AM.
