Leslie Juanita Richards, known to virtually everyone as "Nita," was born August 19, 1958, in San Pedro, CA to the home of Jolene (Dorman) and Clifford Jack Minshew, and died July 27, 2016, at her home in Dora. She was reared by her mother and step-father, Audvie Barnett, and grew up for the most part in Friona, TX. Nita graduated from Friona High School in 1976, and shortly after that moved to Lubbock. It was there that she met and married the father of her children, who was in the military, and they spent the next 15 years moving from one duty station to another. While living in Virginia, Nita earned a degree in Horticulture. She moved to Dora in 1996, and began working with her mother at the Dora Cafe. It was there that she met her husband of 20 years, Gene Richards. When the cafe closed, she became a full time farm wife and mother. She loved to garden, and could make virtually anything grow. Her daughter-in-law said on one occasion, she literally resurrected a stick and transformed it into a thriving plant. Nita harvested and canned produce that her family enjoyed throughout the winter and into the Spring. She was known for her outstanding hot pickles. Nita was a member of the Arbor Day Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Richards of their home; her son, and daughter-in-law, Eric and Loreann Braden of Lubbock, TX; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amber and Sergio Maul of Lubbock, TX and Chelsie and Ron Kelsay of Crestview, FL; two step-sons, Jason Richards and his companion, Angela Scott of Corpus Christi, TX and Kendall and Ashley Richards of Hobbs; eight grandchildren, Sergio, Emmory and Gabriela Maul, Teague, Ryleigh and Morgan Braden and Maya and Audrey Kelsay; and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Richards of Lubbock.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Rex Minshew.
