The Cambridge City (IN) Tribune, Thursday, December 18, 1913
"The passing out of life of Elbridge Gerry Vinton last Tuesday morning, left Cambridge City much the poorer in many ways. His long life of 69 years in our midst, his cheery smile, his general intelligence, his good citizenship, his companionship at home and abroad, his wide acquaintance, his courtesy and gentlemanly bearing, all had a part in our town life that will be hard, if ever, to replace now that he has gone for who did not know landlord Vinton, and who of us a some time or other did not share his bounty? Poor indeed must be the spirit who once knew him could ever forget him.

Mr. Vinton was born at Stoneham, Mass., now a part of Boston, July 11, 1824, the son of Joseph and Sukey Vinton. His parents were part of a colony that left Massachusetts for Iowa in 1841. When they reached this place in 1844 the colony stopped some days and his parents concluded to locate on a small farm at Germantown. The young Mr. Vinton, then in his 20th year, took service with Sol. Meredith who was then running the Blue Hall hotel on the site where Dru Wright now lives. May 9, 1846, he was married to Miss Kate Johnsonbaugh, who died in 1888, after a happy life of 42 years. At that time he rented the hotel from Mr. Meredith and took his young wife there, where they remained until July 4, 1849, when they rented and afterward purchased the United State hotel of Aaron Riesser, who moved to California. This he conducted for more than 34 years and gave the Vinton House a name as widespread as the United States.

Mr. and Mrs. Vinton were the parents of four children, Charles, who died when young, Ida, who married George Stoddard and died some years ago, and Misses Lillian and Flora. March 11, 1902, after a sickness of five weeks, he was stricken by paralysis, and while he suffered little if any pain, he was almost helpless and a great care to his two faithful daughters, who were devoted to him every moment.

In the early morning hours of Dec. 16, 1913, conscious of his Father and his God, he sank into a peaceful sleep that ended in death. The funeral services Friday afternoon will be private and conducted by Rev. Hollopeter. Friends are invited to call Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial in Riverside."
