Chris McCarthy was a champion race walker and was on the 1964 U.S. Summer Olympics team at Tokyo, where he finished 21st in the 50km walk (time 4:35:41.6). He grew up in Boston, served in the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Chicago (B.A. philosophy and M.A. political science). He and his wife Betty McCarthy, who met at the University of Chicago, lived most of their married life in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood; they had no children. His ashes were scattered on the towpath at the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Park at Morris, Grundy County, Illinois, where in later life he loved to cycle (Lat. 41.35644, Lon. -88.43925).
