Eugene Austin Wood, 76, of Cleveland, died Friday, July 21, 2016, in a Chattanooga hospital.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cleveland. He was a well-known nationwide entertainer, performing with many musical groups, including the Fi-Dels, managed by Zola Taylor of the Platters. He was personal friends with David Ruffins of the Temptations, and also appeared with artists such as Sammy Davis Jr. and with the Fi-Dels, and many other famous groups. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Helen Porter Wood Littlejohn.
Survivors include five sons, Shawn Wood, Dino Wood, Keith Wood, and Kenneth Wood, all of California, and Javaris Moore of Athens; two daughters, Ieka Wood of California, and Winsley McCroskey of Etowah; 16 grandchildren; devoted friend, Brad LaChapell of Wisconsin; and many other family and friends in the Athens and Cleveland areas.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 29, at 5 p.m. in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home of Athens with the Rev. Kenneth Scaife officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 4 until 5 p.m.
