Joseph served as a Captain & Executive Officer, U.S.S. Indianapolis (CA-35), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Connecticut prior to the war.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" when the Indianapolis was struck on her starboard bow by two Type 95 torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank within 12 minutes of being struck during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star" and the Purple Heart.

Joseph also has a "cenotaph" in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

From a total crew of 1,196 only 317 ultimately survived the sinking.

The Indianapolis was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with ten battle stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.
