He was born September 14, 1918, in Marion County, KS, the son of John and Martha (Wheatley) Bettles. He graduated from Delavan High School in 1938. He married Marjorie Platz, on September 2, 1941, in Lawrence. Jesse and Marjorie farmed their entire married lives. They raised three children: James, Juanita and Karen.
Jesse was a member of the Wilsey Christian Church. He served several years on the Delavan Grade School Board of Education, a member of the Northeast Kansas Herford Association, the American Herford Association and the Morris County Fair Board.
Jesse treasured his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and watching the Royals and Chiefs. He loved farming, his pure bred cattle, and helping his brothers with farming or soil conservation work. In his younger years, he played the guitar and harmonica for area barn dances. Pete loved to visit and will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marjorie, sister Martha, brothers Bryce and Orval. Also preceding him were his son-in-law Jim Harper, daughter-in-law Patricia Bettles, and grandson Steve Bettles.
Jesse is survived by his son James Bettles, of Enterprise; daughters Juanita Roberts and husband Kenny, of Council Grove and Karen Redding and husband Bud, of Waverly; 6 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and 3 sisters-in-law.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Wilsey Christian Church from 6:00 to 8:00pm.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Friday, July 29th, also at Wilsey Christian Church. Interment will follow at Delavan Cemetery.
