Lonnie M. Rose, Sr., died peacefully on July 20th at his home in Memphis after a long battle with cancer. He was 89 years old. Lonnie was born in 1927 in Tipton County, TN, to Homer and Cordelia Rose. Lonnie was proceeded in death by his parents and his three siblings, Martha Ann, James(Bud), and Stanley.
Lonnie was a graduate of Brighton High School in 1945. Immediately after high school he was drafted to serve in the Military Police Division of the Army during WWII. He was stationed in Italy in the 88th Infantry of the Blue Devils. After the war was over in 1948, he returned to Tipton County, where he soon met his loving wife of 66 years, Eunice (Howard) Rose.
Lonnie was employed as a Parts Manager at Southland Motors and worked in the Insurance industry from 1948-1958. In 1958, Lonnie decided that he wanted to pursue a career in Law Enforcement and joined the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. He was a graduate of the 90th Session of FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA in 1972; The Memphis Police Academy, and attended Memphis State University. He graduated from Military Police School in 1976. In the 1970's, he was the Recipient of the Civitan Club Public Service Award for Most Outstanding Officer. He received many accolades, awards, and commendations. He retired from the Shelby County Sheriff's Department as a Captain in 1983, but continued to be very active in the Law Enforcement Community. He was an Honorary Deputy of the Alcorn County Sheriff's Department. He was an active member of the Memphis Criminal Investigators Association, FBI National Academy Association since 1972, and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) since 1966.
Lonnie joined the Masons in 1951, the Scottish Rite in 1953, and The Al Chymia Shriners in 1954, and he was a Chapter Advisor to the DeMolay's from the late 60's until 1974. Lonnie was an active and contributing member to many organizations in the Memphis community. From 1958-1963 he was member of the Memphis Radio Citizens Band Club, and served as it's President for one year. For almost 20 years, he volunteered as an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America during the 1960's–1980's. Lonnie was also the proprietor and owner of a small printing business that he operated for over 25 years. He grew up long before computers were invented, but was very interested in new technology and quickly taught himself to navigate the internet, use almost any software, and build and repair hardware. Lonnie was also very interested in genealogy, and spent many hours searching and documenting his relatives and ancestors for future generations.
The heart of his life was his family. He was a devoted and caring husband to his wife Eunice (Howard) Rose of 66 years, and a loving and wonderful father to his five (5) children, Lonnie Rose, Jr., (Linda) of Lynchburg, VA; Barbara Rose Glaze (Dennis) of Bartlett; Freddie Rose (deceased); Daniel Rose (Stacey) of Memphis, and Patricia Rose Emerson of Kansas City. He also leaves 8 beloved grandchildren: Charles Rose, Gregory Glaze, Michelle (Glaze) Garey, Elizabeth (Rose) Tonche, Christina Rose, Jacob Rose, Bailey Emerson and Joshua Emerson; and five (5) great grandchildren as well as many nephews and nieces. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and they are left with many memories of their Dad and PawPaw working on and restoring cars, fixing things, traveling, taking long road trips, camping, fishing, attending family reunions, dining out, and shopping at flea markets and antique stores. He was also a loyal fan of The Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis' basketball and football teams. He enjoyed following and watching many college and pro football teams.
Lonnie was a hard worker, and very loyal to his family, friends, his church, his fellow officers, and his country. He was a member of Orchi Baptist Church from 1955-1963 and 1995-2016 where he sang in the choir; and a member of McLean Baptist Church from 1963-1995. Lonnie was a faithful Christian and a gentleman whose love for God was shown through his kind, warmhearted and selfless acts. He helped so many people in his lifetime. He never met a stranger, and always had a story or joke to share. He was blessed with so many family members and friends. Anyone whose life he touched benefited from his love, his honesty and his wit. He will be greatly missed. His has left a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home, Covington, TN on Sunday, July 24th, from 5pm – 8pm. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 25th at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home at 11am, with burial to follow at Walton Cemetery in Covington, TN.
