ACKLEY, KATHRYN E. (nee CREAMER), 93 - longtime owner and president of Ackley's, Inc. in Deerfield Street passed away Monday afternoon July 5, 2004 at S.J. Hospital - Bridgeton after a sudden illness. Mrs. Ackley was a seventy-two year resident of Deerfield Street.
The widow of John J. Ackley Sr., who died in 1968, she was born in Camden and was the daughter of the late Warren B. and Ella Baker Creamer. In 1933 she and her late husband established Ackley's Garage in Deerfield Street on the corner of Highway 77 and Route 540. Mr. Ackley would service and repair farm equipment for local farmers and Mrs. Ackley assisted her husband in their business operation. Later they became a Massey Fergusson dealer and sold tractors and farm equipment all over southern New Jersey. After her husband's death in 1968, she assumed the duties of president and operated the family owned business until its sale in 2000.


Mrs. Ackley was a 1928 graduate of Bridgeton High School and a longtime member of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church where she served as a church trustee and member of the women's guild. She was a 25 years member of the Greenwich Tea Burning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a two time reagent.
An active member of the community, she served for 15 years as a member of the Board of Education in Upper Deerfield Township and was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Upper Deerfield Fire Company #1. In addition, Mrs. Ackley was a member of the N.J. Farm Equipment Dealers Association.
She is survived by one daughter, H. Betty Babb of Canton, Michigan, 16 grandchildren, Kathryn Pancoast (Howard), Lewis Stoms Jr. (Barbara), Eugene Stoms (Deborah), Rhonda Colladay (Patrick), Geoffrey Babb (Mitzi), Daniel Babb (Sheryl), David Babb (Debbra), Deborah Holton (Brian), Susan Fischells (Russell), John Andrew Ackley (Dominique), Patricia Ackley, Henry Behnke (Maria), Rutledge Behnke (Julie), Charles Behnke (Klara), Mary Kathryn Hardwick and Christopher Behnke, 31 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, one sister, Edith Camp of Pittsgrove and 15 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one son, John J. Ackley Jr., two daughters, Lillian Stoms and Carolyn Behnke, one brother, John Creamer and a half sister, Ruth Davis Wells.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon July 9th at 2 o'clock at the Deerfield Presbyterian Church, Old Deerfield Pike, Upper Deerfield Township with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Larter officiating. The interment will be made at the church cemetery. Friends will be received at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday evening from 6 until 9.
