The son of Henry & Harriet Bartle, in 1860 his family was living in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. While he is not shown in that census living with them, he is in the 1863-65 draft registration as a miller living in that township. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Greencastle, Franklin County, August 2, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 7 as a wagoner with Co. K, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. His brother Henry served in the same company.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one [sic] in Chambersburg September 16, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with with Co. M, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865, at Clouds Mills, Virginia.

He married Mary E. Ovelman and fathered William (b. 05/16/67), Anna Mary (b. 07/21/69), Catherine E. "Katie" (b. 07/30/71 - married John H. Burkholder), Clara (b. @1874), and Esther Maude & Edith (b. 11/16/77 - Esther married Thomas Wetzel). In 1870, the family resided in Antrim Township, Franklin County.

He was found dead on the job at a mill, apparently having fallen thirty feet face first onto a rock pile. Mary applied for a widow's pension on a date that is unreadable in her pension index and received it. On July 2, 1890, his minor children applied and were likewise successful.

Current research (Dec 13, 2023) indicates no burial of this individual in Cedar Grove Cemetery though the memorial request specifies Cedar
Grove Cemetery. His death at Brown's Mill might suggest that he was indeed buried nearby. Older records indicate the (undated) burial of one "G. W. Bartle" in the "Dunkard Cemetery at Brown's Mill" which is in the process of being investigated.
