Hazel was always the life of the party. Everyone that met her would never forget her wit, humor and love of people. She had a way of leaving quite an impression and we often called many of the things she said “Hazelisms.” She was a wealth of knowledge and through the many visitors at Hospice Hock Pavilion, we have heard just how many people she has made an impression on, helped changed their lives and showered much wisdom.
She married Graham “Beanie” Thomasson on June 19, 1948. The family is very thankful for the legacy that they left for all of us to remember daily and that live on in our lives. They instilled Christian values in each of their children and were excellent stewards to the children entrusted to their care by God.
Hazel spent her early years working with The Farmer’s Exchange in Durham, followed by a career with The VA Hospital of Durham as a Personnel Management Specialist. Ironically, most every time she was out in public with one of us, someone would recall how much she helped them when she worked there and helped them with decision making that they were so grateful for. After retirement from the VA, she began working and volunteering with the Duke Hospital Auxiliary, Clerk IV…..and building yet another family of dear friends and loved ones to share her goodness with. She retired a year ago due to health concerns and holds a special place in the hearts of the Auxiliary family.
Her loving family members include son, Randy and wife Judy; daughters, Rhonda Penny and husband Melvin, and Renea Hunnings and husband Robert. She had 6 grandchildren: Lisa Glover (David), Jessica Edwards (John), Luke (deceased), Emilee Powell (Nick), Kyle and Kenzie Hunnings. What a blessing to also have had 9 great-grandchildren: Weston, Gunner, Callum, Arden and Ellery Powell, Jayde Edwards, Zoe, Maggie and Lucy Thomasson. Kim Creech, Caregiver and Tom ‘Hammer’ Hodges were constantly by her side, along with many others that had routine visits each week which always brightened her days. She has two surviving sisters, Ruth Parrish and Faye Perry and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mamma Tee’s life will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016, at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 1104 Milton Road, Durham, NC. Visitation will be held prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall from 9:00-11:00 a.m. At 11:00, the service will be held in the Sanctuary. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
