Imislund Family History -- Norway and Wisconsin
-- By Lisa Lindberg, Great-Grand-Niece of Herbert Imislund.

Herbert Imislund -- From Lillehammer, Norway to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Herbert Imislund's parents, Peder & Anne Imislund, were originally from the Imislund Farm Village, 3 miles northeast of central Hamar, Norway. These parents then moved northwest along Lake Mjosa to the newly developing community of Lillehammer. Peder Imislund was a tanner by trade, and their home was in the center of town.

The family's 4 children were born there, their 2nd being Herbert, b. 1860, the oldest of 3 sons. His birth name in Norway was Hagbark, which in Wisconsin was changed to Herbert.

In Spring 1867, Herbert's parents and all 4 children left Lillehammer, to emigrate to America. The family consisted of :
- Father Peder, age 36
- Mother Anne, 37
- Karen, age 9
- Herbert, age 7
- Marcus, age 5
- Anton, age 3
- Karen Imislund, age 25, b. 1841-- Anne's unmarried sister

The family sailed from Oslo for America, taking about two months or more to cross the Atlantic, having to bring along all their own food.

They first went to Vernon County in southwest Wisconsin, to the area between the two large towns of Viroqua and LaCrosse : near the hamlets of Westby and Coon Valley.

On April 25, 1868 in that area, Anne's sister Karen, age 26, married Peder Nelson, b.1843.
In 1866, he had immigrated from Gudbrandsdal, Norway.

Sometime between 1867-1869, the two brothers-in-law, Peder Imislund and Peder Nelson, applied for and were granted homestead rights to two adjoining pieces of land located one county north of Vernon County : Trempeleau County. These two families' homesteads were in the northern part of that county, in a valley northeast of the town of Strum, in an area newly opened to white settlers.

In 1869, the two Imislund sisters and their families travelled from Vernon County to their new homesteads in Trempealeau County, on a road now called Williams Road.

In that same year of 1869 in Romundstad Valley -- northwest of the Imislund sisters' farms and over a wooded hillcrest -- Ole J. Romundstad had also just claimed his homestead, and became their closest neighbor. When Peder & Anne Imislund saw smoke coming from Ole J's chimney, they were so glad to know they had neighbors.

In 1879 -- 10 years later -- the father of the Imislund family -- Peder Imislund, age 48 -- died from a traumatic falling thru the floor of his barn ( -- possibly thru the hay chute ?) .

Peder Imislund left to mourn these of his family members :
- Wife Anne, age 49
- Karen, age 21
- Herbert, age 19
- Marcus, age 17
- Anton, age 15

In 1888, nine years later, the family's youngest son -- Anton Imislund, age 24 -- married and lived in Eau Claire.

In 1889, the family's oldest son -- Herbert Imislund, age 29 -- left Strum for Fergus County, Montana. He made a new life there, and married in 1901.

In 1893, Marcus' sister, Karen, age 35, married Anders Romundstad, and lived on their farm in Romundstad Valley, over the wooded hill to the northwest.

Those three Imislund siblings' departures from the family nest left one remaining offspring on the Imislund Farm : Marcus Imislund, the family's second son.

In the early-mid-1890's, Marcus married Matilda Anderson of Strum, age __, b. 1876. From then until 1905, Marcus and Matilda Imislund and their children lived on the Imislund farm.

Possibly at the time of Marcus's marriage, the family's Mother, Anne Imislund, moved to live with her daughter Karen Imislund Romundstad and family in Romundstad Valley, northwest over the wooded hillcrest.

In 1905, Marcus Imislund sold the Imislund Farm, and he and his family moved to the Skagit area of Washington State.

Marcus sold this farm to Tobias M. Olson of Strum -- Karen Imislund Romundstad's cousin-by-marriage.

T.M. Olson passed the land in to his son, Edwin Olson, then Edwin passed the farm to his nephew, Harlan Isom.

In the 36 years from 1869-1905, the Imislund Farm was lived in by 3 generations of Imislunds. Since 1905, no one has lived on this farm, and over the years, the buildings have gone to wrack-&-ruin.
