Alva Highley was born in Bates Co, Missouri. In 1900 he is living in Grainfield,Gove, Kansas with his mom as a single man. In about 1903 he married Iva jane Jones (1883-1909. Iva was the middle child of James Downey Jones and Mariah Sarah Robb. Her father had lived in southern Gove County near Jerome in anticipation of the railroad. The railroad never materialized there and they moved further north in Gove County near Grainfield, where the railroad had been built. Alva was listed as a Shoe Salesman when he lived in Missouri. At that time Gove County was a very difficult area to farm. Weather was unpredicatable and crops were either Feast or Famine.


The marriage produced 3 children. One child was still born in 1904. The second child was Rovena Highley (1906-1908). The third child was Murial (1908-1909). There was a outbreak of contagious disease in that family. Iva Jane and Alva lost all theyre children in a short period of time. Rovena died in Feb 1908. The last remaining child Murial died in May 1909. Alvas wife Iva passed away on May 26, 1909 just three months after the youngest child.


In 1920 he married Helen Tucker (1897-1970). Out of the second marriage were born Frances Highley born 1921. Virginia Mae (1927-2009).
