Marshall “Evelyn” Mayes, 98, longtime resident of Wallisville, Texas passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 in Anahuac, Texas. The oldest of five girls, she born on June 25, 1918 in Sour Lake, Texas to Marshall and Chollye Evans Pugh. Her family moved from the Sour Lake area to Hankamer for her father’s work in the oil industry. In 1936, Evelyn married G.V. “Son” Mayes, Jr. and they made their home in Wallisville. Together they had one daughter, Marsha Mayes Willcox.

Evelyn was affectionately known by everyone as “Granny”. She touched the lives of so many people always putting other’s needs before her own. Evelyn was selfless and loved to take care of her family and do nice things for others. She had many hobbies, some of which included canning, raising chicken and ducks and cooking. But her favorite hobby of all was deer hunting. There was not anything Evelyn did not like to do.

Evelyn was the oldest member of the Middleton Memorial United Methodist Church in Wallisville. She previously served on the hospitality committee and did a lot of cooking for the church.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband G.V. “Son” Mayes Jr.; her sisters Dorothy Abshier, Mary Joyce Cline and Margaret Ann Harmon; and her son-in-law Tommy Willcox. She is survived by her daughter Marsha Willcox of Wallisville; her grandchildren Landis Moss and husband Clint of Wallisville, Ben Willcox and wife Sherry of Wallisville and Lee Lee Willcox of Wallisville; her great-grandchildren Lauren Hillyer and husband Brandon, Hayden Barbeaud, Erin, Brinlee and Maylee Willcox, Fischer and Adelyn Witherspoon; her great great-grandson Hudson Hillyer and great great-granddaughter Emma Hillyer; her sister Paulette Beazley and husband Herbert of Anahuac; her special friend and caregiver Peggy Armbrister of Wallisville; and numerous other extended family and friends.

Honoring the family and serving as pallbearers will be Ben Willcox, Hayden Barbeaud, Jonnye Cline, Rickey Harmon, Lonnie Selman, Brandon Hillyer, Clint Moss, Cris Stephenson, Pete Barbeaud and James Bricker. Honorary pallbearers are David Jeoffroy, Herbert Beazley, Buddy Harmon and David Bennett, Jr.
