He was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Norwich, the son of the late Edward and Bessie (Hoyle) McDonough. Mac, as he was known to his family and friends, served honorably in World War II and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard with the rank of senior chief.
A life member and past president of the Retired Armed Forces Association, he was also a member for 30 years of the Seaport Sams camping group.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances (Furman) McDonough; and their children, Denise McDonough of Australia, William McDonough Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Waterford and Timothy McDonough and his wife, Paula, of Oakdale; and four grandchildren, Shannon, Riley, Lexi and Nick McDonough.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Paul Church, Rope Ferry Road, Waterford. Private interment with military honors will be in the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.
