In 1850 Ephraim Husted and his family--wife, Nancy B. Welch and children, Lydia Nancy Rebecca and Elizabeth--were living in Decatur County, Indiana. That year he joined his nephew, William Husted and his sister's (Hannah) husband, Samuel T. Saint, on the Flint River Company wagon train from Des Moines County, Iowa to the gold fields of Eldorado County, California. They left April 10 and arrived in California August 7. They returned in 1852 via steamship to Panama, across the isthmus, steamship to New York City, train across Pennsylvania and steamboat down the Ohio River and up the Mississipi River to Burlington, Iowa.
