He was born August 30, 1952, in Jacksonville, the son of Paul A. and Frances Louise Scholes Jones. He married the love of his life, Sheila Utley on May 1, 1977, in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters whom he cherished, Gretchen Tonellato (husband, Joe) of Jacksonville and Elizabeth Lamb (husband, Jared) of Schererville, IN; and a lovely granddaughter, Lyric Lamb; a brother, Melvin Jones (wife, Stella) of Jacksonville; a sister, Tami Suhre of Taylorville; and 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Barbara Ann Cook, Dale Jones, and Paula Jones.
In December of 1969, he became a born-again Christian at a revival in Pekin, IL. A 1970 graduate of Virginia High School, Karl was well known for his skills as a baseball player and received many awards. He was formerly employed at Angelo’s Pizza, the Sandy’s and Hardee’s restaurants, and Colorcraft. For the past 15 years, Karl was a friendly, helpful, and patient postal clerk at his contract postal unit on Veterans Drive in Jacksonville. He was devoted to his family and adored his wife, who he felt privileged to work with side by side each day. Many people will remember his frequent trips across Jacksonville on his yellow scooter. In his spare time, Karl loved all sports especially softball, baseball and basketball.
Karl has served in three different churches as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a founding member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Jacksonville, where he has served as pastor since October of 2005. In addition, his ministry has shared God’s Word at nursing homes, retirement homes, and prisons. He had a great burden for the community and prayed fervently for people to know and receive Christ as their personal Saviour. His greatest love was to share the glorious Gospel of Christ and to show people, from the Bible, how to go to Heaven. He loved His Lord Jesus and demonstrated that same love to everyone he met by his kindness.
Karl will be greatly missed but we KNOW that we will see him again! I Thess. 4:13 states “But I would not have you to be ignorant brethren concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope”. His prayer would be that EVERYONE know 100% for sure that they were going to Heaven.
A home-going service will be held 2:00 pm, Monday, July 25, 2016, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 1:00 pm Monday until the time of services.
Memorial gifts are suggested to Lighthouse Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
