An historic Western writer, he was the son of Thomas Burns and Mary C. Noble. His father was a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War, and Walter's mother had died when he was four years old. His mother's parents were: Lorenzo H. Noble (1819-1899), an attorney from Maine, and Alice Ann Noble (1823-1899). Walter and his father had resided in the Noble household during the 1870 & 1880 Federal Census in Marion Co., Kentucky.

Some records indicate Walter's birth as 1872. The 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census records for Kentucky indicate that he was born ca 1866. Also, his Illinois death certificate indicates this.

He married Rose Marie Hoke on 10 November 1902.

Among his publications was The Saga of Billy the Kid, 1926. He last resided at 7310 Barton Ave., Chicago, Illinois.

Walter Noble Burns saw action during three American Wars

Chicago, April 15 - Walter Noble Burns, former newspaper war correspondent and author, died in a hospital here today.

Burns' best-known work was The Saga of Billy the Kid, but he was the author of numerous other works on the West and Southwest. During the Spanish-American, and World War, he was a newspaper correspondent.

Born in Louisville, Mr. Burns entered newspaper work when he was 18. His widow survives.
