Joel C. Parker of Sheffield departed this earth for his heavenly home on July 22, 2016. He leaves behind a host of family and friends to celebrate his life. Joel, Joe, Red or Big Gnat as he was known to this family, friends and co-workers at Reynolds Metals Company or Wise was always quick with a grin, to be a coconspiriter for mischief or to utter “Roll Tide”. To know Joel was to know his love for his family, his Lord, his church and the Crimson Tide. Survivors include his wife of fifteen years, Pat Parker, son Bill Parker (Audra), daughters Rhonda Alexander Collum (Chip), Debbie Alexander Woodson (Brian), sister Freda Jones, brother Randy J. Parker (Paige) and five grandchildren Cameron, Claudia, Chase, Hannah and Jonathan.

Joel was ordained as a deacon at Valdosta Baptist Church in Tuscumbia and served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia until his death. Most of his career was spent in the cast house at Reynolds as an aluminum worker. However, to provide for his family, Joel worked brief stints as a service station attendant, parts store delivery person and a milk route delivery person. Following retirement in 2001, Joel remained active with the Reynolds Retirees and enjoyed the fellowship with his former colleagues.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents Clifton and Ora Dean Parker and his first wife, Judy Thompson Parker. He was fortunate to find another love in Pat Alexander Parker who he had know since his early years in Kingston, Tennessee. Pat, also a widow, had been married to Joel’s lifelong friend from Kingston, Junior Alexander. Following Judy’s death in 1990 and Junior’s death five years later, Joel and Pat remained in contact. Years later, a romantic relationship evolved from their friendship and following a brief courtship they married in 2000.

Another milestone was reached in 2007 when Joel’s youngest grandchild, Claudia, was born to Bill and Audra. The mention of her name and especially the sight of her quickly brought out a renewed tenderness, a smile and a twinkle in his eye that reminded his family of the younger Joel Parker, the proud papa and now granddaddy.

A celebration of Joel’s life will take place on Sunday at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia, led by Reverend Barrett Long. The celebration will begin at 1:00 with visitation and story sharing with family in the parlor at the funeral home. The memorial service will occur in the chapel at Morrison at 3:00. A private internment ceremony at Colbert Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the memorial service. Pallbearers will be Charles Hester, Jeff Hester, Sammy Richardson, Earle Dean Thomason, Jimmy Don Kimbrough, Archie Kimbrough, James D. Davis and Bill Vickery. Honorary Pallbearers are Fay Watson, John Ellett and members of the Layton Thorne Sunday School Class at FBC.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia/Layton Thorne Sunday School Class in Memory of Joel.
