George R. Hess, the son of Milton and Viola (Bush) Hess, was born September 18, 1928 in Plover, Iowa and passed away on November 20, 2006 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 78 years, two months, and two days. George came to Estherville in 1943 when he was a sophomore in high school. While in high school he participated in all sports. Following high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in Korea. After discharge, George returned to Estherville in 1948 and attended Estherville Junior College for two years where he was active in all sports, lettering in football, basketball, track, and baseball. On November 23, 1949, George was united in marriage to Lorraine Christensen in Estherville, Iowa. He then attended Iowa State College, lettering in football, basketball, and track, graduating in 1952 with a teaching degree. He taught and coached two years in Gladbrook, Iowa. While in Gladbrook, he played semi-professional football for the Waterloo Wildcats and Iowa AAU basketball. He returned to Estherville in 1954 to continue his teaching and coaching career. He coached football at Estherville Junior College from 1955-1958, which included two undefeated seasons. George coached boy's basketball at Estherville High School from 1955-1983 where his teams won six conference championships, and boy's golf from 1968-1988, winning the state title in 1974 and 1981. George was a business teacher, primarily bookkeeping. His teaching career lasted 36 years before he retired in 1988.
George was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville. He was also a member of the Estherville Booster Club, the Elks Lodge, and the VFW Post 3388. George was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing for many years with his family and friends. He also enjoyed golf, softball, and bowling. George was a loyal fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and the Cleveland Indians and Browns.
George was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. George is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Estherville; one son, Wayne and his wife, Kären of Sioux City, Iowa; one daughter, Nancy Temple and her husband, Bruce of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren, Stephanie Todd, Katie Hess, Michael Hess, Kelli Hess, Dillon Temple, Erinn Temple, and Noah Temple; great grandchildren, Shayleigh, Seth, and Grace. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather; son, Don; one brother and two sisters.
