Wrestling Pioneer. In 1947, he broke into the wrestling business and fighting racism competed on what was known as the segregated "Chitterling Circuit." In the early years of the Worldwide Wrestling Federation (W.W.W.F.) African-American wrestlers were only allowed to wrestle against each other. In 1955, he won the Texas Negro Championship in his first professional match. In the 1960s, he was promoted in bouts for the "World's Colored Championship." Later as the desegregation of America took place he was able to battle white wrestlers such as, Mad Dog Vachon, Tony Borne and Dick Steinborn. In the 1970s, he formed a father & son tag team in matches at the Sam Houston Coliseum with son Tiger Conway Jr. A lifetime member of the wrestler's Cauliflower Alley Club, he was a popular fixture at the yearly conventions held in Las Vegas. He also served on the board of directors for the Christian Alliance for Humanitarian Aid, Inc. He died of a stoke.
