Vivian began her career with the city of Van Buren after working several years as the secretary at J.J. Izard Elementary. During her time as the mayor’s administrative assistant she served under the late Allen Ray Toothaker, Gene Bell, the late John Riggs and Bob Freeman. Her duties and service to her community and the city of Van Buren earned her many accolades and honors such as the Governor’s Volunteer Excellence Award presented by Governor Mike Huckabee, a key to the city of Van Buren, recognition from the Arkansas Municipal League at the 62nd Annual Convention for “Devotion to the Cause of Municipal Government and the Advancement of Municipal Affairs,” as well as a volunteerism award named in her honor at the Miss Butterfield Junior High Pageant called the “Vivian Mitchell Make A Difference Award.”
Mitchell was not only proud to serve her city and her community, she also loved serving her church.
As an active member of First Baptist Church of Van Buren she served in many areas over the years such as high school Sunday School teacher and director, WMU member, hostess committee member and chairman, door greeter, choir member and many others. Her love for her work and for her church could only be matched by the love she had for her daughters, their husbands and her four grandchildren. She was very proud of her family and the work and school activities they are each involved in within this community. Vivian loved Van Buren and had a blessed life in this community.
She was preceded in death by her parents Dale and Gladys (Campbell) Tonnemaker and a sister Violet Tonnemaker.
