James Clifford "Smitty" Anderson was born on August 21, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to the late James Anderson and Taulease Odessa Wallace. He was the oldest child born to this union. "Smitty, in addition to his parents was preceded in death by a brother Frank Stevenson.

"Smitty", as he was affectionately known by family and friends, and his mother relocated from Kansas City to Chicgo, Illinois where he atended public schools. He met Margie Helen Lee and in March of 1960, they were united in marriage. To their union three children were born: Christopher (Deb) Anderson of Garner, North Carolina, Corliss Anderson and Cassandra Anderson (Jerry) Davis of Jackson, Tennessee. Smitty had five additional children: Sidney "Sid" Gayles, Chicago, Illinois; Roslyn Gayles, Clarksville, Tennessee; Damian Anderson, Brandon Anderson, and he also raised Tony Hopkins as his own.

Smitty began working as a bartender at the age of 19 and later owned a bar in Chicago. He was later employed by the University of Chicago until he retired in 2006.

Smitty was a dedicated and loving family man, and is survived by a very special and devoted significant other, Ms. Kim Watson. He is also survived by five younger siblings: Lawrence (Barbara) Anderson, Beverly Stevenson Smith, Craig (Norma) Stevenson, Tyrone Wallace, Regina Wallace, and Valerie Wallace; long-time friend Tyree Adams, all residents of Illinois. Smitty also leaves nine grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a host of nieces,nephews and cousins.
