Clayton was a son of Irene Grisso White Shrewsbury and Elbert C White. A born-again Christian, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. He worked in numerous coal mines across southern West Virginia before retiring from Beckley Coal Mine. He was known for his skills as a mechanic and welder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Fleshman White, and a son, Ewell Keith White.
