Socialite. Wife of Bloomingdale's Department Store heir Alfred S. Bloomingdale from 1946 until his death in 1982. She received unwanted and scandalous national headlines during the early 1980s, when it was revealed Alfred had been romantically linked to and financially supporting model Vicki Morgan, who was subsequently murdered almost one year after Bloomingdale's death. It is widely believed her life story was the basis for writer Dominick Dunne's 1990 novel "An Inconvenient Woman". Additionally, there was a 1991 TV series adaptation of the same title. Born Betty Lee Newling, to well-off Roman-Catholic parents, of Australian descent, her father was an orthodontist, Betsy was brought up under privileged circumstances in Los Angeles and socialized with such wealthy heirs as Gloria Vanderbilt. Following her marriage to Bloomingdale, she raised three children and became one of Hollywood's most celebrated socialites and established an inner-circle of close, influential friends including Ronald and Nancy Reagan. She died from heart related issues.
