Donna Crouch passed away on July 19, 2016. She was born on December 28, 1939 in Damar, KS to Sylvenus "Sy" and Marietta Wasinger.
Donna received her Nursing Degree from the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, KS in 1960, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree from Chaminade University in Honolulu, and a Masters of Human Resources Management in Economics Degree from University of Utah in 1979. She was a nurse and administrator serving as the V.P. of Patient Services and Director of Nursing at St Mary’s Hospital located in Grand Junction, Colorado for 20 years.
Donna was married to Major William James Head (Ret.) on January 26, 1963, in Garden City, KS, he preceded her in death. She married John Russell Crouch on July 31, 1994 in Redstone, CO.
Donna served her community as a member of the Board of directors for both the Colorado National Monument and the Museum of Western Colorado. Donna absolutely loved being a nurse. Her lengthy career at St. Mary’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center allowed her to implement many of her deeply held beliefs about caring and nursing philosophy.
Within the hospital, Donna created divisions of nursing by decentralizing nursing into specialties of Medical-Surgical, Critical Care, Surgical, Women and Children’s and Emergency. This allowed for more focused care for the patient and family. She was a leader in creating and implementing a Clinical Ladder for nurses to achieve their own professional growth and development in nursing. Standardizing and researching the very best in nursing practice was an important goal for Donna. The Nurse Practice Committee was formed under her leadership so that nursing could function at a very high level. The Women’s Pavilion was developed during Donna’s leadership so that women could access educational information and classes to enhance their health care.
The Air Life program thrived during the years that Donna was at St. Mary’s, but few knew that Donna implemented paramedics on the flight team to assist in the transport of the patient. St. Mary’s Hospital, under Donna’s leadership, was the first Colorado hospital to initiate domestic violence screening for all women admitted to the hospital.
Donna was active and highly respected by her peers within the hospital. Her contributions to the President’s Council were many and significant. Outside St. Mary’s, Donna was very active in the Colorado Society for Nurse Executives and the American Organization for Nurse Executives. She also was an active member of the Colorado Hospital Association.
A very special honor for Donna was being nominated by her nursing teams and becoming a finalist for the State of Colorado Nightingale Award for Excellence in Human Caring. Donna was a mentor and colleague to many. Her love of nursing and professionalism was profound. She made those around her better by her presence!
Donna had many interests and hobbies. She loved her art group and attended the Thursday class for nearly 20 years. She was a member of The Reviewers Book Club in Grand Junction and the Book Club in Panama where she spent her winters.
Donna enjoyed dancing; she was a Five Star Gourmet Cook; and also an accomplished artist (pastel, oil and stained glass). Donna and reading go together. There was rarely a time she didn’t have five or six books going at the same time. In between reading, cooking and art she tended her lovely garden. All who knew her agreed that she was a most thoughtful and creative gift giver.
Donna loved to travel. During her life she visited numerous countries in Southeast Asia as well as South, Central and North America. Donna and Bill lived several years in Germany.
Donna and John maintained an apartment in Casco Viejo, Panama where they spent winters for 13 years. One of her closest and dearest friends from Panama wrote: Donna fue una mujer inteligente, elegante, educada, excelente esposa y madre y siempre una amiga dispuesta a ayudar. La extrañaré muchísimo! (translation, Donna was an elegant lady, educated, intelligent and an excellent spouse and mother. She was always a friend ready to help. We will miss her a great deal!)
The life of Donna was rich and full. She accomplished a great deal. Donna was gracious, respected and admired. Often the statement “Donna has Class” would be spoken to describe her. How true. At the top of her priority list were always family and friends.
Donna is survived by her husband, John Russell Crouch; her children: Wesley James (Angela) Head, of Homer, AK, William Townsend (Daria) Head, of Cle Elum, WA, Erika (Greg) Doyle, of Grand Junction, and Zach Crouch, of Grand Junction; grandchildren: Jackson Head, William Head, Piper Doyle and Ozkar Crouch; siblings: Kenneth (Cathy) Wasinger, of Topeka, KS, Max (Anita) Wasinger, of Capistrano Beach, CA, Susan (Skip) Reed, of Syracuse, KS, and Barbara (Kevin) Jeffries, of Dallas, TX; 14 nieces and nephews; and 19 great-nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Jackie Kay Wasinger.
She was rich in love. “Till we meet again.” A Celebration of Life will be held on October 22, 2016. The location is to be determined.
