Velma M. Stallworth

July 02, 1935 - July 18, 2016

Surrounded by her loving family, Velma Wacille Miller Stallworth, 81, said goodbye to her earthly home on Monday, July 18, 2016. She left peacefully and entered her eternal rest where she was forever united with her Lord Jesus and reunited with her "boyfriend" State Stallworth.

Velma was born July 2, 1935, but life truly began 16 years later when she met her soul mate. It was during a basketball tournament that she and State's love story began. He was the love of her life and their union was a fairytale come to life. You never saw Velma without "her State," and she wouldn't have had it any other way. For 65 years, 62 of them as a married couple, they were inseparable. In April of 2016, their love story came to a close.

Velma spent her entire life in Moss Point and Pascagoula. She was a proud Magnolia Monarch, a member of the Class of 1954. While the purple and gold of her alma mater were colors she wore proudly, Velma looked good in every color and was known as a fashionista. She was also known for her witty banter, always delivering funny one-liners with perfect comedic timing. An expert in the kitchen and always a graceful hostess, Velma never let a day pass when she didn't show true Southern hospitality in her home. She was truly a woman to be admired.

During her lifetime, she worked at her alma mater in the cafeteria and for the Jackson County Head Start. Later, she worked for 20 years in reproduction at Ingalls Shipbuilding and retired as a supervisor.

Throughout her life, Velma was a devoted Catholic. She was a faithful member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Pascagoula. After that, she joined the congregation of St. Joseph the Worker in Moss Point.

Velma was preceded in entering eternal peace by her loving husband of 62 years, State Stallworth, Sr.; her beloved grandparents, Ovead and Ida Davis; her parents, Horace Miller, Sr., and Katie Mae Parker; one brother and sister-in-law, Horace Miller, Jr. and his wife Louise; and, two sisters, Mary Delenye and Arnetta Jones.

She leaves a beautiful and loving family to cherish her memory, including one son, State (Pricilla) Stallworth, Jr., Moss Point, MS; three daughters, Cecelia Durr and Agnes Stallworth, Moss point, MS; and Robbi Stallworth, Harvey, LA; two brothers, Calvin (Gwen) Nettles, Boston, MA; and George (Sandra) Miller, Alpharetta, GA; five sisters, Gloria Gibbs, Los Angeles, CA; Edith Lane, Pascagoula, MS; Jessie Davis, Carol (W.D.)
