He first entered the service as Private on 4 Oct 1861 at Jonesboro, Georgia; in Company F, 2nd Georgia Cavalry and continued until 9 Oct 1863, when he was captured at Sugar Creek, Tennessee and remained a prisoner until 28 Mar
when he was exchanged at Richmond, Virginia, then he was permitted to return home.
Son of Romulus Sanders Cates and Lucinda E. Reeves.
