PEORIA – Richard Matthew “Dick” McClelland of Peoria, Ill., passed away from this earth on the Sabbath day of July 17, 2016. He was surrounded by his loving wife and four daughters.
Dick was born Nov. 16, 1932, in Camden, Ill, as the youngest child to Benjamin and Hannah (Tweedell) McClelland. He married his love, Carol (Workman) Roy, on Aug. 1, 1958, at her parent’s home in Chatham, Ill. She survives him.
Surviving are four daughters who adore him, Melanie (Pat) McNiff of Mapleton; Marcia (Rod) Wanner of Morton; Michelle (Michael) Jenkins of Hopedale; and Melissa (Mike) Haas of Bloomington. He is also survived by 12 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 10 great grandchildren, many loving brothers and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
They all know how much they were loved by him and he was treasured by them. He set a fine example for his children and grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his infant daughter, Martha, his parents; four sisters, Pauline Greene, Florence Hale, Alleen and Eileen; two brothers, Jim and Warren. Dick made and kept life-long friendships, many who have preceded him in death, and those friends became the family’s friends.
As a young man, Dick excelled in many high school and collegiate sports. He turned down a draft offer from the Yankees and served proudly in the Army. After graduation from Western Illinois University, he owned and operated his own Independent Insurance Agency, Muller-Riley-McClelland, Inc. in Peoria for many years. Hard work, honesty, integrity, respect and compassion for others were values that he and Carol shared and taught to their daughters and grandchildren.
He also had a great sense of humor and his signature laugh is well known. He loved music his entire life, where as a young man he was a tenor in a quartet, but as he got older he formed “The Joyful Singers” who toured and blessed many seniors in retirement homes.
He loved many sports. He was an avid golfer and St. Louis Cardinal fan, but loved watching his grandkids events and games even more.
There are many professional and personal accomplishments and awards that could be shared about Dick, but he wasn’t fond of personal accolades. He was open in sharing what was really of value in his life.
Foremost of value in his life would be that he loved and served the Lord Jesus. He accepted Christ as his Savior and shared this belief with others through devotion, sharing his faith and through his actions.
Dick would have been the first to tell people that he was blessed because he had a wife who spent 58 years devoted to him every day. A woman who honored the vows she shared with him so selflessly. He took great pride in his relationship with Carol and they shared in their faith and service to others.
He recently told us that “his greatest achievement in his life was his daughters”. Such kind words he left for us to cherish. The best way that we can honor him is to have a strong faith and serve our Lord.
He and Carol had a home in Hot Springs Village, Ark., where they served God at Mountainside United Methodist Church and currently attended and loved Morton United Methodist Church.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Morton United Methodist Church in Morton. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 and from 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Mount Sterling City Cemetery in Mount Sterling, IL.
