John Austin Knowles, Jr., 88 years old, passed away on July 19,2016 at his home in Huntsville, Texas. He was born on March 16, 1928 in Newton, Alabama to Pauline Martin Knowles and John Austin Knowles, Sr.

Johnny grew up in Newton, Alabama. He said it was the best place to live. He graduated from Newton High School and kept in touch with high school friends his whole life. He went to his last high school reunion when he was 82.

After 2 years in the Navy, he attended Troy University. In 1949, he began a 20 year career in the Air Force. He was sent to Alaska, Florida, Tripoli, Ohio, England, and retired in Longview, Texas. He was a salesman for various companies in Longview until he moved to Huntsville, Texas to be closer to the grandchildren.

Johnny married Gloria Cauthen Knowles in 1951. They were happily married for 62 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pauline Knowles, his stepmother, Jo Knowles, his wife, Gloria Knowles, his daughter-in-law, Kim Knowles and his nephew, Buddy Garrison.

He is survived by his children, Cindy [Darrel] Martin of Huntsville, Texas, Mickey Knowles of Longview, Texas, and Randy Knowles of Huntsville, Texas; his sister, Rose Reynolds of Orlando, Florida; his Grandchildren, Beth [Luis] Cornejo, Daniel [Lacy] Martin, Todd Knowles, Rachel Knowles; his great-grandchildren, Samuel and Stella Cornejo and Jay and Cooper Martin; and his nieces and nephews.

Johnny loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, and taking care of his dogs. He had friends all over the country he met through hunting and dog breeding. He was friendly and outgoing and could tell the best stories.


Mr. Knowles will lie in state from 8:00 AM till 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM (NOON) on Friday, July 22, 2016 in the chapel at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
