RCMP Constable Thomas (Brian) King was nearing the end of his shift on April 25, 1978. Unknown to him, 2 high school students had developed a plan to kidnap, torture, and kill a police officer that very night. These 2 fiends smashed out the taillight of their car & removed the license plate as bait.
Constable King was just behind colleague Constable Doug Rushfeldt as the officers pulled over different vehicles on traffic stops. Unknown to Constable King, he had pulled over the vehicle with the 2 teenage boys with murder on their minds. As he returned to his car to check a driver's license, the 2 teens attacked him and a wild struggle took place on the side of the road. Constable King was eventually overpowered & shackled with his own handcuffs. One of the boys took his service revolver and fired a round off, then the 2 boys forced their hostage into the trunk of their car and drove off, leaving the police car abandoned. Constable Rushfeldt, clearing his traffic stop, drove past King's police car but saw no one around. He had heard the shot but thought it was a backfiring car.
The 2 boys beat & tormented Constable King, then stopped to boast to friends and show what they had done. Their friends told them to go away as they wanted nothing to do with a police kidnapping.
Meanwhile the abandoned police car was soon found and roadblocks were set up to find the missing policeman. The boys drove Constable King to the Queen Elizabeth Power Station, where it is believed that he may have tried to escape and one of the boys pistol-whipped him, then shot him twice in the head with his own gun and dumped him in the North Saskatchewan river.
The boys were stopped at a roadblock. 1 bolted from the car but was soon arrested after a short foot chase. He confessed to police and the boy who pulled the trigger was arrested at a different roadblock, riding with his brother. The 2 boys were given prison terms of 25 years to life.
Constable King was buried with full honors at the RCMP Depot Cemetery in Regina.
