Charles was appointed a militia captain in 1834 by Gov. Robert P. Dunlap. A copy of the formal appointment can be found at the Nobleboro Historical Society. Capt. Charles was also a successful farmer, the biggest in town in terms of land and crop production for the year 1849, as reported in the 1850 census. His crops included corn, potatoes, barley, oat and wheat. He also had 7 milk cows and 5 sheep and was the top butter producer in town. He and his wife Elizabeth "Betsey" Umberhind, had seven children, 6 of which are buried in this cemetery. Capt Charles wife Betsey, was the sister of Gorham Umberhind, husband of sister Susan V.
