James was the son of Isham Harris and Martha Green. At the age of 17 he fought with John Sevier at the Battle of King's Mountain on Oct. 7, 1780. The battle was won in a little over an hour. He returned to Granville County to marry Priscilla Gilliam. James died in Spartanburg, SC with his son William Washington. My husband joined SAR under the application of James Harris. James is no longer acknowledge by DAR or SAR for his participation at Kings Mountain. Within the last 20 years he has been taken off both lists, more proof is required. I am obtaining a preponderance of evidence to prove James did indeed fight.
My husband and I believe he is buried in the Golightly-Harris Cemetery with his son, but the stones are so badly eroded and broken we could not obtain any proof.
James and Priscilla had eight children:
Elijah Harris (1783-1825)
William Washington Harris (1788-1875)
Sarah "Sallie" Harris Hancock (1790-1858)
Alfred H Harris (1790-1876) 3rd great grandfather
Amey Gilliam Harris Hearn (1793-1869)
Priscilla Lundie Harris Haltom (1797-1868)
Isham Green Harris (1804-1848)
James Gwinn Harris (1802-1840)
Priscilla's second husband was William Hearne. From this union, they had one son, Noah Gilliam Hearne. James and Priscilla's son Alfred married his step-sister Priscilla Hearne. Priscilla died in Montgomery County, North Carolina. (burial unknown)

Gravesite Details

James may be buried in the Golightly-Harris Cemetery. His son William Washington owned this land at the time of his father's death. The stones are so badly destroyed, many with no markers at all. I have seem the cemetery.
