Jerry Lee Townsend, 74, of Hickory, died unexpectedly, Thursday, July 14, 2016 after a short period of declining health.

Born September 11, 1941 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Mildred Greenhill Townsend and Pearlie Townsend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Townsend; and a sister, Judy Townsend Oldaker, all of Hickory, NC.

Jerry was retired from retail sales and carpentry. He served proudly in the U.S. Army. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed canoeing, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his fiancée, Ethel Beatrice Abernethy, of the home; brothers: Kenneth Townsend and wife Peggy Cook Townsend, Lonnie Townsend and companion, Linda Brown Wright; sisters: Patsy Townsend Carver, Regina Townsend Penley; sister-in-Law, Glenda Huffman Townsend; all of Hickory, and 10 nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Royal Chapel Church of God, 7190 George Hildebran Road, Hickory, NC, with the Rev. Ron Whitener and the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full graveside military honors performed by American Legion Post 48.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. at the church.
