August John Schumacher, 91, 12619 South Road 700 West, Westport, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 1994 at 12:31 p..m. at his residence, following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 9, 1902 in Effingham, Ill., he was the son of Gerhardt and Marie Anna (Opky) Schumacher. He was married to Ida Marie Wissel Sept. 2, 1925, in Morris, Ind., and she preceded him in death June 24, 1987.

He moved to Batesville at the age of two years and to the Westport area in 1931. He had resided at his current residence since 1955. He was a farmer and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in North Vernon, Ind., and the Knights of Columbus 1641 in North Vernon.

He is survived by three sons, Paul E., and Robert L. Schumacher, both of Westport and Gerald E. Schumacher, Elizabethtown, Ind.; one daughter, Annabelle Starke, Westport; one sister, Levina Wilmerding, Cincinnati; one brother, Joseph Schumacker, Batesville; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Carrie Wintz and Philomine Schumacher and one brother, Edward Schumacher.

The Rev. Robert Drewes will officiate the services at St. Mary's Catholic Church in North Vernon at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Vernon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bass and Gasper Funeral Home, Westport.

There will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Program through the funeral home.
