Leonard P Czarnecki 85 of San Antonio passed away on June 22 2016. Len was born in Shamokin Pa on April 11 1931. The youngest of 13 children to Polish immigrants Antoni and Bronislawa Czarniecki. Len joined the Army in 1948 at the age of 17. While serving in Occupied Japan, he was called to the Korean War and fought there 1950-1951 with the 7th Div. They landed in Inchon, fought up to the Yalu river and Chosin Reservoir. The Chinese entered the war and he survived the Hoengsong Massacre. Lenny said at least he got to pee in the Yalu before making a strategic withdrawal. After Korea he went into the 1st Airborne Grp 505th Infantry. In 1962 joined the Special Forces and was in the 1st,5th,7th,10th,46th SFG and went to Vietnam and Thailand during tours there. In the 30 years of service he received many citations, including United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal-1st OLC, CIB-2nd Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign w/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star-1st OLC, Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal-4th Award, Master Parachutist Badge and a Thai Master Parachutist Badge. Leonard retired in 1980 as a Sergeant Major.
After retirement he started a Home repair business which he ran for 25 yrs. Leonard was a lifetime member of the Special Forces Association and the VFW. He was very active in both the local Special Forces Chapter XV and VFW Post 8541.
Leonard is survived by common law wife of 20 yrs. Maria Trongone, her daughters Linda and Christina and Maria's mother Olevia.He is also survived by ex-wife of 35 yrs. Erla Czarnecki and their 3 sons. Michael Czarnecki his wife Bodil and their children Linnea and Axel all living in Sweden. Robert Czarnecki his wife Wyndy and their children Lauren and Erin living in San Antonio. Eric Czarnecki in Chicago.Other surviving family member include a daughter Linda Miller of Pa.
Lenny was quite a character and will be missed by everyone that knew him because of his willingness to help with most anything and his sense of humor. He was one hell of a Man, Father, Grandfather, a Soldier's Soldier and Comrade to many. We miss him already.
Memorial Service with Honors are going to be at Ft Sam Cemetery on July 25 2016 at 1130.
