Motion Picture Director, Actor. Perhaps the most inept in the history of Hollywood, today, his films are considered "camp classics." During his career in Hollywood, he was virtually ignored, and his career was amazing in its number of failures. He was tagged as the worst director of all times. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, he later professed to be a transvestite. During World War II, he claimed to be wearing a red bra and panties under his Marine uniform during a military operation. In 1946, he attempted to break into the film industry, initially without much success, until his first film, "The Sun was Setting" (1951). From there he directed the much ballyhooed film "Glen or Glenda" (1953), about Christine Jorgensen, a man who undergoes a sex change operation. This was, perhaps, his best film. His 1958 film, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" had become to be considered the worse film ever made, and it now enjoys a large cult following. He continued to make monster films and a number of "Grade B" films, then moved on to a series of adult rated films. Adult rated spoofs of his earlier movies, such as "Plan 69 from Outer Space" (1993) and "Glen and Glenda" (1994) were based upon his screenplays. After his death, director Tim Burton wrote and produced a film about him, "Ed Wood" (1994), starring Johnny Depp. It has been joked that the budget for "Ed Wood" was more than the combined costs for all of the films that Ed Wood actually made. He was married twice.
