Entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See, he was appointed apostolic delegate in Vietnam and Cambodia on May 30, 1969 by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular archbishopric see of Tongres on the following July 20 from Cardinal Leo Jozef Suenens, assisted by Archbishop Opilio Rossi and Bishop Jules Victor Daem.
Apostolic pro-nuncio in Uganda between December 17, 1975 and November 16, 1981, he served the same office in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden between October 31, 1985 and March 28, 1992 when he was named pro-nuncio in The Netherlands. Retiring on February 8, 1997, he spent his renaming years in Rome where he passed away at 81 years of age. His body was transported to Antwerp and there laid to rest in the intimacy of his family at the Wilrijk Steytelinck Communal Cemetery.
