Zelda McCombs Ertter
1924 - 2016
Zelda McCombs Ertter passed away peacefully early in the morning on July 8. Zelda was born October 11, 1924 in Riverdale, Idaho to Archie Ezekiel McCombs and Ruby Smith McCombs. Her grandfather, Hyrum Smith, was an Idaho pioneer who settled in Riverdale in 1880. Zelda and her twin sister Zella were the oldest of Archie and Ruby's four children. Mamie Jean and Armin were the two younger siblings. Following Ruby's death in 1937, Archie remarried, and Zelda's half sisters Linda and Judy were born.
Zelda left Riverdale after graduating from Preston High School and moved to Boise. She met Larry Ertter in Boise during World War II, and they were married in 1947. Larry and Zelda had five children, Terrence, Gary, Barbara, Karen and Nancy.
The family lived on 15th Street in Boise's north end until 1960, at which time they moved to Horizon Drive. A cabin on Sylvan Beach at Payette Lake served as a summer getaway, and many of Zelda's fondest memories were of those summers in McCall. She was a relentless picker of huckleberries during the hours when she was not watching over her children as they discovered the wonders of beach sand, guppies and dock slivers.
Her children all benefited from her unique mothering technique, a style she eventually referred to as "tender loving neglect." She had confidence that all five were well equipped to succeed at whatever they attempted, and she trusted them to find their own paths with only an occasional gentle nudge. Zelda passed along the confidence and loving nurturing method to all her children and grandchildren.
As her children left the nest, Zelda turned her attention to golf, bridge and bowling with friends at the Plantation and Boise State football and basketball in the cold months. Zelda and Larry were both avid supporters of local high school and college sports and academics. Zelda also immersed herself in quilting and produced an abundance of family heirlooms.
Zelda is survived by her sisters, Jean, Linda and Judy, all five children, her grandchildren Wendy, Virginia, Kristin, Beth, Hailey, Leif and Hannah, and great grandchildren Garrett, C.J., Dominique, Tearyn, Sanders, Ruby and Henry. She was preceded in death by Larry, Zella, Armin and her parents.
The family sends a special thanks to Bruce and Mary Ann Murdoch for taking wonderful care of both Zelda and Larry in recent years at the Plantation Place. A brief ceremony will be held at the Plantation Place on July 15 at 1:30. Religious services and inurnment are planned in Riverdale for August 27. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Deseret Industries or the Idaho Youth Ranch.
